How to choose Laminar Air Flow Cabinet

To make the correct selection of equipment for laboratories and other manufacturing areas, you should clearly understand the difference between Laminar Flow Cabinets (Hoods) and Biological Safety Cabinets.

Laminar Flow Cabinets (Hoods) are the main equipment used for creating dust free abacterial air environment in the working area of the cabinet. Laminar Flow Cabinets are designed to prevent the external and cross-contamination of substances and products in the working area of the cabinet but they are not designed to protect an operator or the environment.

Biological Safety Cabinets are used for physical isolation (retention and controlled removal from the working area) of microorganisms to prevent the contamination of personnel, the air in the working area and the whole environment.

Hence, the selection of a Laminar Flow Cabinet only depends on the requirements for the air purity in the working area and the convenience of an operator to use the cabinet, while the selection of a Biological Safety Cabinet is based on the following factors:
    • risk degree accompanying work with the agent used in the experiment
    • possibility of volatile liquid formation while using this laboratory equipment
    • necessity to protect the result of the experiment from air contamination

PCR Cabinets are the main equipment used for clean work with DNA-tests in PCR-diagnostics. It provides protection of working zone from the environment.
